Special Issue - Recent Advances in Food Allergies: Clinical Relevance, Cross-Reactivity, and Emerging Trends in Diagnosis and Management
Posted on 2025-07-16Food allergies are an increasingly prevalent and clinically significant health concern worldwide, affecting both children and adults. They describe the adverse health effects in which immunological mechanisms are involved that can be induced in sensitized subjects following dietary exposure to specific proteins in foods. They involve abnormal immune responses to specific proteins in foods, often leading to symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe anaphylaxis. Recent advances in food allergy research have provided deeper insights into its clinical relevance, particularly regarding the impact on patients' quality of life, diagnosis, and management. Cross-reactivity, where proteins from different allergens share structural similarities, complicates diagnosis and treatment. Emerging trends in diagnosis, such as molecular and component-resolved diagnostics, promise to improve accuracy and personalization of care. Additionally, innovative management strategies, including oral immunotherapy, epicutaneous immunotherapy, and biologics, are reshaping treatment approaches, offering hope for better outcomes. This topic explores these recent developments in food allergies, focusing on clinical implications, cross-reactivity, and emerging trends in diagnosis and management. It includes a variety of food allergens, from common allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and wheat, to emerging allergens like fruits and vegetables, mammalian meat and milk as well as food additives.
